Green Scenery Engages Stakeholders

Green Scenery, a climate change campaign organization in Sierra Leone on Friday 26 February 2021 engaged stakeholders in four chiefdoms in Port Loko District on land reforms. The training took place at Banka Boothy Hall at Bakeh Loko Chiefdom Port Loko City.

The reform training is to increase land owning families in the four chiefdoms including Bakeh Loko,Bureh, Maconteh and Kasseh in a bid to broaden their knowledge on land rights and the Land Commission Bill of  2020. The training targeted relevant stakeholders including Paramount Chiefs, civil society organizations, district multi stakeholders platform, district office, Office of National Security, Human Rights Commission and land owning families.

Mr. Mohamed Kargbo, the Project Coordinator Pro-poor Land Governance Green Scenery said that the training of the stakeholders is to enable people to contribute in the land reform of Cap 122 .Mr. Kargbo revealed that the Green Scenery is an environmental advocacy organisations that champions land corruption in Sierra Leone. He went on to state that their contribution is very meaningful in the Land Rights and Land Commission Bill of 2020. He said that this will be used as a guide by government and environmental activist in land disputes. He said if Cap 122 if adopted in the Land Rights, it will avert land conflict.

Mr. Kargbo further admonished participants that the training will support DMSP in executing their activities to address issues between land owning families and investors.

Mr. Alimamy Patient Kargbo in the office of the Ombudsman is the lead facilitator of the training informed participants that the people need to step fast in bringing out issues that affect land owning families in their respective communities in land tenor system. . He pointed out key issues as corrupt land tenor system for the sale of land in the provinces.

Mr. Kargbo said that the rationale behind the training is to enable stakeholders have the awareness of their rights on land matters.

Regent Chief of Bakeh Loko Chiefdom, Mr. Foday Santigie Kanu appreciated the organizer of the training for their timely intervention. He said what he learnt from the training will guide him to decide on land issues in his chiefdom.

Ya Bomposseh Turay chairlady of Maconteh chiefdom expressed delighted over the training. She said that women are the most affected in land issues in Port Loko District. Ya Bomposseh Turay further admonished that women in rural areas are discriminated, neglected and disowned by family members from owning land. She thanked Green Scenery for training stakeholders stating that this will go a long way to address women’s rights in land issues.
