Another defining message from Hon. Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Sierra Leone, during his address at the 16th African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA) in London, was his emphasis on the indispensable role of integrity in public finance and national development.

The Minister underscored that “integrity in the mobilization of resources is the foundation of sustainable development and public trust.” His message reflected a fundamental principle of responsible economic governance: national transformation depends not only on a government’s ability to generate revenue and mobilize resources, but equally on its commitment to managing those resources transparently, responsibly, and in the best interests of its citizens.

Whether resources are mobilized domestically or secured through international partnerships, concessional financing, grants, investments, or other forms of development cooperation, they must be managed diligently and guided by sound policies, fiscal discipline, accountability, and a clear commitment to national development.

The ultimate responsibility of government is to ensure that resources belonging to the country are used effectively and strategically to improve the lives of its people, strengthen public institutions, build critical infrastructure, create economic opportunities, and lay the foundation for sustainable and inclusive growth.

The Minister’s remarks reinforced Sierra Leone’s continuing commitment to strengthening fiscal governance, improving accountability, and building the institutional credibility necessary to attract investment and deepen public confidence.

At the heart of his message was a simple but powerful principle: the credibility of a nation’s economic transformation is determined not only by how much money it mobilizes, but by the integrity, discipline, and effectiveness with which those resources are managed and invested for the benefit of its people.
